When a great man passes from this world, he leaves his possessions to his heirs. He leaves behind an excellent estate for his children. He might also leave behind a last will, in which he might have specified how his estate will be divided among his heirs. The Holy Spirit speaking to us through Apostle Paul in the Epistle to the Ephesians says:
“In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will” (Ephesian 1:11, ESV).
If you have been born-again, Jesus Christ left you an inheritance in His Will and Testament. You are an heir of God and a joint heir with Christ. And Father God has already allocated an eternal inheritance for all His children. Peter the Apostle writes that God, by “His divine power, has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. Through these, He has given us His precious and magnificent promises“ (2 Pet 1:3,4, BSB).
In this blog, we’ll explore these magnificent promises and give you helpful steps to possess your inheritance. So, whether you’re just starting your faith journey or looking for additional practical tips, read on!
What is our inheritance in Christ?
Although God has given all of His children an inheritance, few of us understand what we have been given. Many of us often think this inheritance is the gift of eternal life. In a sense, new birth gives us eternal life. In light of this, we might say that it is the commencement of our heavenly heritage. For everyone born again, eternal life is the start of our inheritance.
Peter writes in his 1st Epistle saying, ” Blessed be the God …According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you” (I Pet 1:3)
God told us that each of us had received an inheritance; therefore, we must ask the question: What is an inheritance?
Define inheritance.
We define “inheritance” as an estate, property, genetic characteristic, or other possession passed down to an heir. It is the common term for property or any residence an heir receives from their parents.
What does our inheritance in Christ contain?
The Christian’s inheritance in Christ includes but is not limited to: the gift and indwelling of the Holy Spirit; safety and protection; provision; spiritual, physical, and material-financial prosperity; and delegated authority in the Name of Jesus.
In short, as Peter puts it in his Epistle, God’s “divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. Through these, He has given us His precious and magnificent promises“ (2 Pet 1:3,4). It is indeed a goodly heritage.

Claim these precious promises of God today
Meditate on these promises made by God until they unite with faith in your heart, and you begin to experience them. Personalize these blessings and appropriate them for yourselves; for to you, child of God, belongs the Covenant, the Blessings, the Adoption, and the Promise. “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us” (2 Co 1:20). We discuss seven groups of promises below.
1. Claim Healing and Divine Health
This first group is on God’s provision for your healing and divine health
“But to you that fear my name, shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings” (Mal 4:2).
“When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses” (Matt 8:16,17).
“Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was [l]bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes, we are healed.” (Isa 53:4,5, NKJV) and the passage in 1 Pet 2:24 also say the same. Claim these when you are sick. Read more on healing at this Link: You Are Healed
2. Claim Spiritual, mental, physical, and financial Prosperity
The second group of promises is the provision for prosperity. Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers” (3 John 1:2). A second verse from the Epistle of Paul confirms this “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Phi 4:19).
The Bible tells us that it is God’s will for you to prosper and be in health. John in KJV used the phrase “I wish above all” that you prosper fear or worry about provision. He will lead you daily with benefits. “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you”(Mat 6::33)
“Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s” (Psa 103:5).
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over” (Psa 23:1,2,5).
3. Remember You are the “Apple of His Eyes.” He will not forget you
In this third group, God says He has graven you on His palm and that you’re the ‘apple of His eyes,’ so no evil can touch you.
“Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me” (Isa 49:16). And “the very hairs of your head are all numbered” (Matt 10:30).
“For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye” (Zec 2:8).
And also –“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD” (Isa 54:17).
4. Expect His Protection and Deliverance: God is with you always, He will deliver and defend you
Another promise of God in this fourth group is that He will never leave you but will always be at hand to deliver you. In addition, He has given specific angels an assignment to ensure your protection and safety. “For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end” (Jer 29:11).
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness” (Isa 41:10).
“And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you” (Isa 46:4).
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come to nigh thy dwelling; For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone” (Psa 91:9-12). In addition, God has provided angelic protection for His children.
5. Use the delegated Authority and Power in the Name of Jesus
“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth” (Phi 2:9,10).
“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you” (Luk 10:19).
And “these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover” (Mark 16:16-18). –> read more about this in Power and Authority
The Lord Jesus gave us the right to use His name. So the “Name of Jesus” belongs to you, child of God; you can defeat the enemy every time with it. “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth” (Phil 2:9,10). Therefore, begin to use the Name of Jesus to confront every situation in your life today.
6. The Holy Spirit is the Guarantee of our inheritance
“In him, you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guaranteed of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it,e to the praise of his glory. (Eph 1:14) .
God sent the Holy Spirit to us to abide with us. He is our Teacher, Guide, Helper, and Strength. In addition, the Bible tells us that He’s the guarantee of our inheritance until the time for full possession. Speak to Him daily. Ask Him to guide you every day. Listen and obey His instructions.
7. The Lord Himself is our portion
Finally, the Bible tells us that the Lord Himself is our portion. The Holy Spirit given to us is the downpayment of our inheritance. ”LORD, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine. The land you have given me is pleasant. What an extraordinary inheritance! “(Psalm 16:5-6 NLT). Read more on the promises of God at A Goodly Heritage-2
Steps to take to possess your God-given Inheritance.
God has given us many precious promises. We have a magnificent inheritance. But we must take possession of them if we are going to enjoy these promises, Like God spoke to the house of Jacob in the Book of Joshua to march in and take the land of Canaan, we must march in by faith and possess our possession.
1. First, get rid of the grasshopper complex; you’re a David the Goliath conqueror.
When the ten spies returned and brought reports that giants dwelt in the land of Canaan, fear gripped the children of Israel. They doubted God, were conquered by fear and doubt, saw the enemy occupant as giants, and saw themselves as grasshoppers next to them. Meditate on God’s word until you know that ‘greater is He that is in you, that he and everything that’s in the world bundled together”.
Stand on the promises of God in the section above, and become a David who defeated Goliath.
2. Second, fight off the complaining attitude.
Don’t murmur and complain. That displeases God. The murmurers and complainers did not make it to Canaan. The book of Hebrews warns: “Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. ” (Heb 4:1)
Spend time in the word of God and build your faith.
Follow the example of Caleb and Joshua.
3. Third, ascertain the will of God and surrender to Him
- Before Israel could step into the land of promise, they had to cross River Jordan. Likewise, we have to submit to God’s will, die to self, and cross over to the other side. Crossing Jordan symbolizes dying to the self-life as we descend into its water, followed by resurrection to a life of the Spirit, a life of freedom on the other side.
- In short, you must ascertain that your request is in the will of God. And then surrender your life to His will
- Next, Thank God for making you meet the requirement to possess the inheritance
- And now, you are ready. Nothing can hinder you now.
4. Now, by Faith, claim the specific promises
- First, Meditate on God’s word again and again during your time of worship and prayer (maybe worship and prayer with fasting). For example, if you’re claiming your healing, meditate prayerfully on Isaiah 53:4-5. Keep His words before you. Like God told Joshua. Meditate on it day and night because this is your success in life; in fact, this is your life.
- Secondly, Say God’s words out loud to yourself, and sing them in songs. Do this until they form faith in your heart.
- Next, Open your mouth, Speak in faith and claim the specific promise you’ve been meditating on.
- Most importantly, Believe the Word, Speak it out, and Act on it(take the corresponding action).
5. Praise God; it’s yours now; take hold of it by faith, “calling those things that be not as though they are”
- Start thanking God for the possession which you started enjoying when you declared it above
- Start acting and behaving as if the physical/financial manifestation has already taken place
- Keep holding on to your faith confession while waiting for your claim’s physical manifestation; Don’t give up because of contrary physical evidence; For they will change. And you will reap the reward of your faith in due time
Be Strong in the Lord and very courageous
Let there be no mistake about it; the flesh and the devil will fight you tooth and nail on your way to possess your possession. These are the current occupant of your promised land and will not release it to you without a fight. However, God has made provision for you to overcome. In other words, He has prepared weapons for you to overcome with. And has already given you the victory. But you must get up, be strong, confront the enemies and take the land. In short, He has given you the Land, but you must go and take it.
The most potent enemy, the Israelites, faced was not the 7 Canaanite nations that occupied the land of promise but the enemy within them. Doubt and unbelief was their greatest enemy, and it caused many of them to perish in the wilderness.
Dear reader, you need to wage war in the spiritual realm and subdue doubt and unbelief. The Bible in the Epistle to the Corinthians talks about the weapons of our warfare, saying:
“For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments, and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God and take every thought captive to obey Christ.”
Therefore “Fight the fight of faith and lay hold on the promises.”
Confess and Declare the following about yourself
The promises of God will not let go of me
They will pursue me and overtake me
His blessings will be before me and behind me
They will guard my right side and protect my left
The Lord will hear me in the day of trouble
And the Name of the God of Jacob will defend me
He will send me help from His Sanctuary
And strengthen me out of Zion.
Therefore, Bless the Lord, O my soul
And forget not all His promises and benefits
He satisfies my mouth with good things
So my youth is renewed as the eagles
He forgives all my iniquities and heals my diseases.
The God of Abraham will arise early to help me
He will supply all my needs and fill my cup to overflowing
The Lord will not allow my foot to be moved
The LORD is my keeper, the LORD is my shade.
No, the sun shall not smite me by day, nor the moon by night.
The LORD will preserve me from all evil: he will preserve my soul.
And above all, the LORD will preserve and keep me for Himself from this time forth, and even forever.

Conclusion
The bottom line is that although it may feel like an uphill task to possess your inheritance, you can do it if you put in the necessary efforts.
The secret lies in practicing the steps outlined above, and you’ll be on your way to taking possession of what is rightfully yours. The final point we must emphasize is that to take full possession of your inheritance, you will need to force your way into your land of promise. In other words, you will need to cast down all your doubts and internal arguments that are contrary to the word of God by His supernatural weapons at your disposal and subdue them under the dominion of Christ. Then march in, Child of God, take and occupy the land, and begin to possess your possession in the Name of the Lord and King, Jesus the Anointed One.
