God has been pleased to leave us no doubt about how or where all things began. In clear, unequivocal language, he has stated the source of all things for our assurance. On the barren Isle of Patmos, where he was banished, the beloved John heard a great voice as of a trumpet. Upon hearing it, he turned in the direction of the voice. Upon turning, he saw the Lord in His glory and majesty. And the first words uttered by the Holy One of Israel were,
“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending … the first and the last” (Rev. 1:8-11).
Jesus Christ is known by many names in the Bible, but perhaps one of the most powerful and meaningful is Alpha and Omega. This title highlights His divine nature, as it refers to Him as the beginning and end of all things. To truly know Jesus as Alpha and Omega is to fully understand the depth and breadth of His character and embrace His power and grace. In this article, I want to share with you what I have learned about Jesus Christ as the beginning and the end and what it means to know Him in this way.
Understanding the meaning of Alpha and Omega
Our Lord Jesus called Himself the Alpha and the Omega. In Greek, He is the Alpha and Omega; in Hebrew, the Aleph and Tav; in English, the A and Z; and their equivalents in any other language. In using these words to describe Jesus, the Bible tells us that Jesus is the first and the last, the beginning and the end. This means that Jesus was there in the beginning before anything was created, and He will be there at the end when all things come to their ultimate conclusion.
All originated in Christ. All things were created from the substance of His divine energy and Being. All things are held together in a harmonious whole in Him. And all things are for Him.
Jesus as the Beginning
To understand Jesus as the beginning, we must return to the beginning of creation. In the book of Genesis, we read that God created the heavens and the earth. But it is clear from the New Testament that Jesus was present at the creation of the world. In the Gospel of John, we read, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). This Word is Jesus Christ, and He was there in the beginning, creating all things.
“Christ is the firstborn of the creation of God” is found in Colossians 1:15 in the New Testament. This verse refers to the preeminence and supremacy of Jesus Christ over all of creation. This signifies His position of authority and prominence. In Jewish culture, the firstborn son held a special status and inheritance rights. Similarly, this verse is often understood to emphasize that Jesus, as the Son of God, holds a unique and exalted position over all creation. He is the “firstborn” in rank and authority, and everything in creation is subject to him.
Jesus as the Firstborn Among Many Brethren
The phrase “Jesus is the firstborn from the dead” is found in Colossians 1:18. The apostle Paul is speaking about Jesus Christ, the “firstborn from the dead” being the first to experience the unique and unparalleled resurrection, in which he conquered death and was raised to eternal life in a glorified body(READ Forever Alive: Jesus Resurrection Triumph..). Jesus’ resurrection was not like the temporary resurrections experienced by others in the Bible, but rather a permanent victory over death, with a transformed, imperishable body (1 Corinthians 15:20-23). He became the firstborn of the New Creation. In saying Christ is the firstborn, the Bible confirms that many are born and yet to be born after Him into the same ‘New Creation’ Family.
In another passage in the Bible, Christ is referred to as the firstborn among many brethren” (Romans 8:29). In this verse, the apostle Paul is speaking about the relationship between the Lord Jesus Christ and those who have been born-again through faith in him. Jesus as the End, the Culmination of All Things
When the Bible refers to Jesus Christ as the Omega, the End, or the Last, it signifies His ultimate fulfillment of God’s plan, His final authority, His eternal nature, and His role as the ultimate destination of all things. Recognizing Christ as the Omega is essential in understanding God’s complete and final work in Christ and acknowledging His supreme lordship over all creation.
Here are some key points to understand the significance of Christ being the Omega:
- Ultimate Fulfillment: Jesus Christ is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s plan for humanity and creation. He is the culmination of God’s redemptive work, completing what was initiated in the Old Testament and fulfilling all prophecies and promises concerning the Messiah. In Him, God’s plan for salvation is fully realized.
- Final Authority: As the Omega, Jesus Christ is the final authority in all matters. He is the last word, the ultimate Truth, and the highest authority in the universe. His teachings, commands, and judgments are final, and His authority is above all powers and principalities.
- Eternal Nature: Jesus Christ, as the Omega, is eternal and everlasting. He transcends time and space, existing before all creation and enduring throughout all ages. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and His lordship extends into eternity.
- Ultimate Destination: Jesus Christ is human history and existence’s ultimate destination and goal. He is the endpoint towards which all things are moving, and in Him, all creation finds its ultimate purpose and meaning. He is the culmination of God’s plan of salvation and the end towards which all creation is heading.
- Final Hope: Jesus Christ, as the Omega, offers the final hope for humanity. He is the one who brings about the ultimate resolution of all things, conquering sin, death, and evil. In Him, believers find their eternal hope, as He promises to bring them to Himself and establish His kingdom forever.
The significance of Jesus being the Alpha and Omega
Alphabetical languages usually have their letters arranged in a fixed order. The first is often used as a symbol of the beginning, and the last symbolizes the ending. Letters and language are meant to be the expression of Truth. Truths are communicated through and are contained within the alphabets from which such languages are formed. Words are formed from the letter components contained between Alpha and Omega in Greek or A and Z in English. Our Lord, being the Alpha and Omega, is the expression and embodiment of the Truth. He is the Word. He is the expression of the totality of God’s mind and wisdom from beginning to end. He is the Word that was in the beginning and is now and forever shall be.
The significance of Jesus being the Alpha and Omega cannot be overstated. It means that Jesus is the one who created all things and the one who will bring all things to their ultimate conclusion. It means that Jesus is the beginning, end, and everything in between. This Truth should give us great comfort and peace. No matter what happens in this life, we can trust that Jesus is in control. He knows the beginning from the end and has a plan for our lives. We can trust Him entirely and know He is faithful to His promises.
Christ as the Center and Circumference of Creation
In that long ago, the beginning, all things were created in Him. Apart from Him, outside of Him, there was nothing made. In God’s revelation of Himself and His plan of the ages, He has used many characters, but the first was Christ, and the last one will be Christ. All commences in Him, and all will conclude in Him.
When God planned the universe, He designed it in and around His Christ. Christ is the center and the circumference of it all. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. The old creation was made in Him and for Him. It began in Him, and it will end in Him. The present creation was created in Him. Christ is the beginning of the creation of God.
“These things says the Amen, the faithful and true witness, The beginning of the creation of God” (Rev. 3:14). He will also be the end, for all things must begin in Him and end in Him, for this is the Father’s purpose for His Son. Everything that can exist is included in the scope of creation in Col. 1:16-20. ALL are created in Him, and All are created through and for Him. He is before All. He binds all together. In All, He has preeminence. All fullness, or the fullness of All, dwells in Him. He reconciles all through the blood of His cross, including all that is in heaven and on the earth. Nothing is omitted, and nothing is left out.
Jesus Christ is the Beginning and Lord of the New Creation
“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Heb 1:1-3).
Let’s understand that the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, include both the substance and the time element of the creations of God. Christ Jesus is the Alpha, which means that He was there at the beginning with God and is the beginning. He is the beginning of God’s creation, whether the Old or the New. The Spirit of God speaking unto the Church about him confirmed this in the Book of Revelation: “And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God” (Rev 3:14)
The Lord is the Amen. He is the sure and trustworthy One, the faithful and true Witness. He is the beginning, the Origin, the Author, the Chief, the Lord, and the Ruler of the Creation of God. The Amplified Version renders this verse as saying, “And to the angel (messenger) of the assembly (church) in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the trusty and faithful and true Witness, the Origin and Beginning and Author of God’s creation” (Rev 3:14). Not only were all things made by Him and for Him, but all things were created in Him.
Jesus Christ is the Originator of All Things
Let’s read what Scripture says in the Epistle to the Romans. “O the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counselor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?
“For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory forever. Amen” (Rom 11:33-36, KJV).
The 36th verse is rendered in the Amplified Version: “For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. [For all things originate with Him and come from Him; all things live through Him, and all things center in and tend to consummate and end in Him.] To Him be glory forever! Amen (so be it)” (Rom 11:36, Amplified). The Weymouth translation is: “For the universe owes its origin to Him, was created by Him, and has its aim and purpose in Him. To Him be the glory throughout the Ages! Amen” (Rom 11:36, Weymouth).
Everything begins in Him and ends in Him! He is the First and the Last! He is the Beginning! The beginning was not just a date on the calendar. The beginning was and is a glorious Person—our Lord Jesus Christ! If you consider these words in reverent meditation, you will understand the words that open our Bible as never before.
All Blessings from the Godhead are Channeled Through Christ Jesus.
In Colossians 1:16-17 we read that all things are “through Him.” All things from the Godhead are channeled through Christ Jesus. We have been blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. All the blessings from the Godhead come through Christ Jesus and are provisioned in Him for us. The word translated here is the Greek word “dia,” which means “through,” “on account of,” or “by the agency of.” This message is beautifully presented in the Book of Corinthians: “For in Him was created the universe, of things in heaven and things on earth, things seen and things unseen, thrones, dominions, princedoms, powers, all were created and exist through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in and through Him the universe is one harmonious whole.” (Col 1:16-17, Weymouth).
We have access to God through Christ the Anointed One. He is our access to the Father. As stated by the Apostle in the Epistle to the Ephesians, “Through him, we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father” (Eph 2:18). It is through Him that we have eternal life. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom 6:23). “And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement,” and we have peace through Him. He is our High Priest, our Advocate General; therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
To Him Are All Things; He is Our Destination
The final part of the verse Rom 11:36b) states that to Him are all things. In the original Greek, the preposition here means the point reached, the ultimate result of all things. The Amplified renders this as saying that “all things center in and tend to consummate and to end in Him” (Rom 11:36b, Amplified). All things will end up in Him. He is the Omega. He is also the perfection of the new creation of God. All members of the new creation are growing in stature unto Him. He is both the New Creation’s starting point and the finish line. “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ” (Eph 4:13-15).
Conclusion
Knowing Jesus as Alpha and Omega is a powerful and transformative experience. It means understanding that He is the beginning and end of all things and that we have access to infinite power and grace in Him. As we embrace this Truth, we find ourselves drawn into a deeper relationship with Christ that brings joy, peace, and purpose to our lives. If you seek to know Jesus in this way, I encourage you to dive deeper into the Word of God and pray, seeking His presence.
