There is a question that every one of us must answer at some point in our lives: “Who do you say Jesus is?” This is a question posed by the Lord to His twelve disciples. He is not necessarily looking for an intellectual or theologically sound answer but a personal one that speaks to our relationship and intimacy with Him. The question He is asking is, “What does the Son of Man mean to you? Who is He really to you?”
Some say He is John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and some even say, Jeremiah. Some recognize Him as the Messiah, the King of the Jews, the Savior of the world, and even God, the King of kings and the Lord of lords. But let’s talk about you. Who do you say He is? Who is Jesus to you?
Let’s ask differently, similar to how Pilate asked it. What will you do with this man? Will you let Him reign over you? What inscription would you put on His cross if you were on Calvary’s Hill? Who is Jesus to you today? Is He the Christ, the Savior of the world, or just a historical figure? Will you join the mockers who sneer at Him, or will you fall at His feet and crown Him King of kings and Lord of lords?
The entire Scripture has been given to help us see Jesus and know Him. He is portrayed as the seed of the woman, the Passover lamb, the Manna, the Bread of Heaven, and the Rock that was smitten to bring forth water, among several other descriptions.
Jesus is the Word of God
Jesus is the Word who was with God in the beginning and made all things. He is the Son of God and the Son of Man. He is Emmanuel, God with us, who became flesh and dwelt among us. (John 1). He is Wonderful, the great Counselor, our divine Rabbi, and Master. He is the mighty God, our everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).
Jesus is our Rock, Fortress, and Deliverer
To many of us, Jesus is the Rock, our hiding place. He is our Fortress and Buckler, our Refuge and Strength, our very present help in trouble. He is our Deliverer, the Horn of our Salvation, and our High and Mighty Tower. Jesus is our Compassionate High Priest, our Advocate and Defender, the Friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Jesus is God our Provider, Jehovah-Jirah
Like Abraham, I know Him as the I AM, the Self-Existing, Self-Sufficient One. He is my Jehovah-Elyon, the Most High God; my Jehovah-Jirah, the Lord, my Provider; my Jehovah Rapha, the Lord my Healer. He is the Balm of Gilead, the Great Physician, the Sun of Righteousness with healing in His wings. Jesus is all these and much more (Genesis 14:19,20; Genesis 21:33-22:1).
Jesus is the Rock and Living Water
Jesus is the Living Water, the water out of the rock in the wilderness, and He is the Rock Himself. He alone gives the water of life, and whoever drinks of it will never thirst again, for it becomes a well in them, and out of their bellies flow rivers of living water. He is the Living Word, the Bread of Life, the Manna in the wilderness that sustained millions for forty years. Jesus is the Living Water, quenching our spiritual thirst and refreshing us with His grace, love, and presence.
Jesus is the Lord of Hosts
He is Jehovah-Tsebaoth, the Lord of Hosts, our Lord the Conqueror; Jehovah-Nissi, the Lord our Banner; Jehovah-Tsidqenu, the Lord our Righteousness. He is our Peace, for He is Jehovah-Shalom, the Lord of Peace, and Jehovah-Shamah, the Lord is there. The Lord Jesus is always there for us, our ever-present help in trouble. He has promised never to leave nor forsake us. For He is the Fourth Man in the fire whose form is like the Son of God (Isaiah 31:5, Jeremiah 23:6, Judges 6:24
Jesus is the Redeemer
He is the Redeemer, the One who paid the price for our sins with His own blood on the cross. He is the Victor over sin, death, and the grave, who conquered the powers of darkness and rose victorious on the third day. Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life, and whoever believes in Him, though he may die, yet shall he live (John 11:25). He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6).
Jesus as Good Shepherd and Faithful High Priest
He is the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep, leads us beside still waters, and restores our souls. He is the Door of the sheepfold, through whom we enter eternal life. Jesus is the Vine; we are the branches, abiding in Him and bearing much fruit. He is the Light of the world, shining in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome Him. He is the Bridegroom, and we are His beloved bride, awaiting His return.
As the good Shepherd, He guides, protects, and provides for His flock, leading us beside still waters and restoring our souls. The Bridegroom passionately loves and pursues His people, calling us into a deep, intimate relationship with Him. He is our Savior, rescues us from sin and gives us new life, restores us, and makes us whole. Jesus is our Friend, who loves us unconditionally, listens to our prayers, and walks with us every step of the way.
So, who do you say Jesus is?
Is He just a historical figure, a good teacher, or a prophet? Or is He your Lord and Savior, King and Redeemer, Shepherd and Friend? How do you see Him? What does He mean to you? He is the Son of God, the Lamb of God, the Victor over sin and death, the King of kings, and the Lord of lords. He is Jesus Christ, the One who loves you unconditionally and gave His life for you. God gave Him to us as the answer to the deepest longings of our hearts, the source of true joy and fulfillment, and the hope of eternal life.
