There’s a question every one of us must answer at one time or another. If we will know the Lord, we must continually answer this question posed by the Lord, for ourselves. “When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets” (Mat 16:13,14).
Turning to His disciples, He asked: “But whom say ye that I am?
Today, He’s asking this same question from you and me. The Lord is not necessarily looking for an intellectual or theologically sound answer from us but a personal response that speaks of our relationship and intimacy with Him. He’s looking for an answer from the heart. The question He’s asking is this: “What is the Son of Man to you? What does He mean to you? What is your commitment and dedication level to this man?”
The answers given by the disciple show the view of the general public who do not have any education from the Spirit of God. This is the same way today. There are many who think they know the correct answer to this question, who think they know who the Son of man is, but are in the same group as the ‘men’ that got it wrong. The only way to answer the Lord’s question correctly, that is –know who He is and answer correctly is by the Holy Spirit revealing this to us. No man can know Jesus except the Spirit of God reveals Him to that individual.
In response to the question the Lord asked the disciple, “Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Mat 16:16).
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven” (Mat 16:16).
The Lord was in essence saying that Peter did not arrive at that answer by his human understanding, but that he got it by the revelation of the Spirit of God. Let us therefore begin this meditation by listening to the Father God on who He says Jesus is. Let’s pray as we read for God to reveal to our hearts who Jesus is.
When I was in middle school, one of our favorite songs in our little Christian fellowship was a beautiful song titled, “Let’s talk about Jesus”. When singing this chorus, you would see many of us, little kids jumping with joy. This song summarized most of what we knew about our Lord JESUS. We didn’t know much but were eager to tell the very little we had been taught to both young and old without any fear of contradiction. The first part of the song goes this way:
Let’s Talk About JESUS
Let’s talk about JESUS
The KING of kings is He
The LORD of lords supreme
Through all eternity
The great I AM, the Way, the Truth, and Life, and Door
Let’s talk about JESUS, more and more
The second part of the song was like a dialogue, and it goes thus:
Some folks may ask me
Some folks may say—Who is this JESUS?
You talk about, everyday?
He is my Savior, He set me free
Now listen, while I tell you,
What He means to me, What He means to me
Chorus:
He is my everything, He is my all
He is my everything, both great and small
He gave His life for me, made everything new
He is my everything,
Now what about you, Now what about you.
Jesus Christ, Savior, and Lord
The Lord Jesus Christ is my Savior. Yes, He’s also your Savior and the Savior of all who have accepted Him so. In fact, He is the Savior of the whole world, the world just hasn’t accepted Him yet. He is KING of Kings and LORD of Lords.
He is not only my Savior but also my Lord. His word has first place in my life. He is my Savior, Lord, and King. Jesus Christ is my Healer. If you are a child of God He wants to be your Healer too. Healing belongs to you, and you should find out how He can be your Physician.
He is the Lord my Shepherd, my Provider, my Protector, and my Guide. He leads and watches over me, His goodness and mercy follow me all the days of my life and He keeps me in His pavilion all the days of my life.
He is Lord of all, Master over the good and the evil, over the living and the dead, over angels and demons, over the subatomic particles and over the planetary bodies, over the heavens and the earth, and over principalities and powers. “Yes, He is the Supreme Ruler” of the universe and the entire creation of God.
Jesus the Anointed One, is the LORD. God Almighty has made Him Lord over all. In Hebrew Scriptures, He is “Adonai,” the Lord, the Master, who is over all and above all. He is the one who has the keys. He has all dominion and power. What He shuts no man can open, and what He opens no man can shut. He is the Lord God, “Adonai Elohim.” He is the One who speaks and it’s obeyed; when He commands, it is done. Even the winds and the waves obey His voice, and “fire, hail, snow, vapor, and stormy winds fulfill His words” (Psa 148:8).
Peter, speaking to the men of Judea on the day of Pentecost quoted from the 110th chapter of the Book of Psalms. In this prophecy, we learned how God the Father ordained Jesus as Lord of all and set Him in the highest position of Lordship. After He completed the work of our redemption, God the Father sat Him at His own right hand of power, giving Him absolute authority. The apostle Peter referring to this psalm said:
“This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
“For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
“Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ”(Act 2:32-36).
God the Father Highly Exalted Him
The message in the second chapter of the Epistles to the Philippians is even more emphatic: “And every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phi 2:11). This passage tells us how God highly exalted Him and set Him Lord over all.
“He is Lord, He is Lord
He has risen from the dead and He is Lord,
Every knee shall bow; Every tongue confess
That JESUS CHRIST is the LORD”
I am glad and give thanks to God Almighty, that I am one of those who have willingly chosen to bow the knee to Jesus and acknowledge Him as my Lord, Master, Savior, Redeemer, and King. And I hope this is true for you, my reader, as well.
He is my Lord. He is my king. He reigns in me and rules over my life. He is not the type of king Aristotle described, for his king reigns but does not rule. Aristotelian God is a do-nothing king. Our God reigns, and He also rules. Our God is involved in our lives. He is seated upon the highest Throne above the heaven of heavens, and yet rules in the lives of His saints down here. Not only this but Jehovah God the Lord rules in the kingdom of men (Dan 4:17).
The Lord Jesus reigns. He rules the universe by the word of His mouth. He is in charge. He is in control. And He is steering the cosmos to the desired destination. Praise His holy Name forever. Lift up the Name of JESUS. Glory to God!
So let’s return to the question the Lord is asking you and me, “But who do you say ye that I am? Each of us will answer this question for ourselves, but first, let us listen to God Almighty as He gives us testimony concerning His Son.
